7 Dec. (EUROPA PRESS) - In a significant judicial twist, Alberto Fujimori, the former president of Peru, was released from prison on Wednesday. The release order, issued by the Peruvian Constitutional Court, marks a turning point in the case that has captured both national and international attention.

The Peruvian broadcaster RPP was the first to report Fujimori's release from prison at 18.30 (local time). This event takes place despite the contrary resolution of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, highlighting the tensions between national and international jurisdictions.

Fujimori, who ruled Peru during the 1990s, was serving a 25-year sentence for his involvement in the Barrios Altos and La Cantuta massacres, events that have remained in the country's collective memory. His legal situation took an unexpected turn in December 2017 when he received a humanitarian pardon from then-President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski. However, this pardon was revoked months later by the Peruvian justice, in the summer of 2018.

The Constitutional Court's recent decision to approve Fujimori's release from prison has generated a wide spectrum of reactions, from the relief of his supporters to the indignation of human rights defenders and victims of his government.

This case continues to be a focal point in the debate on justice and politics in Peru, highlighting the complexity of national reconciliation and the responsibility of leaders before the law. Fujimori's release is not only a legal event, but also a significant moment in the country's political history.
